FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
As we come to the end of another busy and successful term here at St Francis Xavier Primary School, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank our entire school community—students, staff, and families—for your hard work, support, and enthusiasm over the past ten weeks.
We began the term joyfully with our Easter Hat Parade and have since experienced an incredible array of events and activities that reflect the richness and vitality of school life at St Francis Xavier. These included:
- Celebration of First Holy Communion
- Year 4 Camp at Camp Goodenough
- Regional and Diocesan Cross Country
- Winter Sports Trials
- Mother’s Day Celebrations
- Rugby 7s Tournament
- School Assemblies
- Safe on Social Presentations
- A Fantastic School Disco
- Brian Kelly Cup
- GLOW Gathering for Year 6
- School Photos
- Rugby Union Gala Day
- Choir Performance at Parish Mass
- Athletics Carnival
- Musical Showcase
It is truly amazing to reflect on just how much has been achieved in a single term—all while high-quality teaching and learning continued every day in every classroom.
Student reports were sent home last Friday afternoon. We are incredibly proud of the effort and progress our students have made this semester. We encourage all families to take the time to read through the reports together and to celebrate both the areas of growth and the goals for continued improvement. Parent–Teacher–Student interviews will take place in Week 3 next term, with bookings available once we return in Term 3.
A special mention must go to the wonderful Athletics Carnival held last week—a highlight of the term. The school spirit on display was second to none, and it was a joy to see our students participating with such enthusiasm and sportsmanship. A huge thank you to Mrs Miles and Miss Beecher for organising such a well-run and spirited event. Thank you also to the many parents and carers who volunteered their time to help on the day—your support is what makes events like this possible. We are also grateful to the students from Xavier Catholic College, as well as to the Lennox Head Lions Club and The Coffee Van team who kept everyone fed and energised throughout the day.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to all the students who performed in our Musical Showcase last Friday. It was a truly wonderful celebration of the creative and varied musical talents of our students here at St Francis Xavier.
The performances were vibrant, engaging, and full of energy, and it was clear that each student gave their very best. It was especially pleasing to see how much joy the Showcase brought to everyone in the audience—students, staff, and families alike were thoroughly entertained by the outstanding talent on display.
A sincere thank you to Mrs Loadsman, Mrs Ons, and Mr Hosie for their dedication in organising and preparing such a successful event. Your time, guidance, and encouragement have given our students a special opportunity to shine. Bravo to everyone involved!
As we head into the school holidays, I encourage all families to enjoy a well-earned break—rest, recharge, and, hopefully, shake off the winter coughs and sniffles! We look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 3, refreshed and ready for another exciting and full term of learning and community life here at St Francis Xavier.
BEST WISHES TO MISS BEECHER AND MR LEE: We extend our heartfelt congratulations and very best wishes to Miss Abbie Beecher and Mr Jordan Lee as they prepare to celebrate their wedding this Saturday.
We wish you both a beautiful day filled with love, joy, and unforgettable memories as you begin this exciting new chapter together. May your marriage be blessed with happiness, laughter, and a lifetime of wonderful moments.
We very much look forward to welcoming Mrs Lee back to St Francis Xavier next term!
GRANDPARENTS DAY: Please mark the date of Friday the 25th of July as we will be celebrating Grandparents Day here at St Francis Xavier. We would love to see as many grandparents as possible. If grandparents are unable to join us they may like to send a video message of no longer than 10 seconds to their grandchildren here which will be shown at our special Grandparents Liturgy. Please forward videos to Mrs Loadsman at hayley.loadsman@lism.catholic.edu.au Please watch upcoming newsletters for further information.
TERM 3 CALENDAR: A copy of the Term 3 Calendar has been sent home with your child today. This calendar includes all the important dates and events happening here at St Francis Xavier, Ballina throughout the term.
We kindly ask families to place the calendar in a visible spot, such as on the fridge or noticeboard, and refer to it regularly to stay up to date with what’s happening at school.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another fantastic term together!
Wishing you all a safe and restful holiday.
Warm regards,
Tony

The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C
This coming weekend's reading is from Luke 10:1-12,17-20 - Jesus sends out 72 people to announce the coming kingdom.
Jesus teaches us about togetherness and community. As a family, we learn to depend on each other and learn to work together and live together in harmony.
In this weekend’s Gospel, Jesus sends out 72 Disciples (in pairs) to work together to spread the good news and mission of the Kingdom of God.
As a family, discuss how your family works together. Talk about the various roles and tasks that each family member undertakes to ensure the smooth running of your family on a daily basis.
To conclude your family discussion, pray together in the words Jesus taught us. Our Father…

Waste Free Wednesday - Wednesday 27 August
The Student Representative Council (SRC) are working with the Ballina Council who are supporting us to reduce the amount of waste we produce as a school. As part of this, the SRC are working to create a Waste Free Wednesday.
What does Waste Free mean?
A waste-free lunch contains no throwaway packaging and produces no food waste. The typical waste-free lunch is packed in a reusable lunchbox or bag. Food is put in reusable containers rather than wrapped in disposable packaging. A drink is in a refillable bottle and all containers are resealable so that leftover food and drink can be saved for later. Fruit and vegetable scraps (e.g. apple cores and banana skins) will be composted at school through our compost bins.
On Wednesday 27 August we will be holding a waste-free day. The class with the least amount of plastic waste will receive a prize (as determined by the SRC).
We thank you for supporting the SRC in creating a waste-free environment at our school and look forward to seeing a reduction in our plastic waste here at school.

STEM Day Success!
A sincere thank you to Mrs Loadsman for coordinating our students' participation in the Tweed Zone STEM Day, held last Monday at St Finbarr’s Primary School, Byron Bay. Six of our Year 5 high-potential learners represented St Francis Xavier with enthusiasm and curiosity.
The day was a celebration of innovation and inquiry, bringing together a group of enthusiastic students to explore exciting, hands-on STEM challenges. With a strong focus on the 6 C’s of Deep Learning—Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking—students engaged in rich learning experiences designed to stretch their thinking and spark their curiosity.
The day was packed with exciting hands-on learning experiences that inspired curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Students rotated through a variety of STEM challenges and workshops, exploring the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in fun and meaningful ways.
From designing structures and coding simple programs to experimenting with forces and motion, the students were fully immersed in problem-solving and teamwork. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm as they collaborated to find innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
Events like STEM Day play a vital role in helping students build confidence and develop a love of learning across these important subject areas. Thank you again to Mrs Loadsman for her incredible planning, and to all the St Finbarr’s staff who coordinated the day, especially Rachel Mitchell, Mary McEvily Butler and Joe Keane.
It was inspiring to see students work so collaboratively, communicating their ideas and embracing challenges with confidence and resilience. Opportunities like STEM Day are powerful in nurturing the talents of high-potential learners and empowering them to thrive across a range of future-focused skills.
As a result of this exciting day, the students have requested to start a lunchtime STEM Club at St Francis Xavier. Their enthusiasm for continued learning has led to the launch of this new initiative, with Mrs Conte leading the club in Term 3 and Mrs Loadsman taking over in Term 4. We can’t wait to see the incredible ideas and projects that come from this student-driven opportunity!
Thank you again to everyone involved in making the Tweed Zone STEM Day such a success.

Year Six Poetry
This term, our Year Six students have been diving into the world of free verse poetry—reading, analysing, and crafting their own original poems.
With the learning intention to write a free verse poem about hope, students used a planning template and literary examples to guide their thinking. Their inspiration included:
- Symbol of hope: A feather
- Synonyms: Quill, plume
- Repetition: Falling, dropping
- Word associations: Faith, light, renewal
- Figurative language: The feather speaks gently to the heart that dreams. In the stillness of dawn, hope opens its wings, announcing a new day.
Students explored how carefully chosen words, imagery, and symbolism can express powerful emotions and ideas. Their poems reflect thoughtful interpretation and personal insight, showcasing both creativity and a growing understanding of poetic devices.
Check out some of the beautiful free verse poems written by our talented Year Six poets!

WriteOn Competition
The WriteOn competition is an annual writing competition in New South Wales, for primary school students. It aims to encourage students to develop their writing skills, express their ideas and potentially become published authors. The theme for 2025 was “Could they be changing?” and students were able to write an imaginative text up to 500 words. Our school had over 50 students enter the competition, and while the calibre was very high, only one finalist per stage was able to go through to the next stage. Congratulations to Hugo Leturgie and Lea Leturgie whose writing was submitted to compete against other schools in NSW!
STAGE 3 FINALIST
The End and the Beginning- By Hugo Leturgie
Theo huddled in his cosy cave. Outside, cold, cold, cold wind enveloped everything. It covered all the crumpled mountains which were celebrating the 150th winter since the apocalypse. It covered the aged, cracked roads that drove through the valleys of rubble. It covered the lakes that were polluted with Death himself. Theo knew that the world was about to die. He knew that meant no more Grandma.
No more Mum.
No more Theo.
What he didn’t know was that there was a door to light in this darkness. A new sun, hiding behind the horizon. Other human beings, waiting to be freed.
Until now.
‘What do you mean we’re the only ones left!’ Theo yelled, heat slowly rising up inside his face.
Grandma replied calmly, ‘There are only three human beings free from the Soul Sucker and they are us.’
‘So I have to complete this quest?’ Theo complained.
‘We are too old. You are 16. You are more athletic.’ explained Mum.
Only armed with a map and a dagger, Theo set out the next day to stop the Soul Sucker. He sported a grey hoodie and jeans so that the forest of rubble couldn't stab him with their piercing knives. The light was dying and the piece of parchment told him that he had passed halfway through his journey and was now in the territory of the Critterdragons.
The Critterdragon is a small alien species that bites with a venom like fire, making its victims swell up, ready to be eaten by the Soul Sucker. It has a glistening and scaly hide that looks like a leaf, unlike the Soul Sucker, which is like a furry shrimp that eats human souls for breakfast, leaving the sufferers worse than dead.
If Theo wanted to make it through there safely he would have to run for his life before the sun awakened for its morning stretches. He darted through thickets of nettles, curtains of vines and a warm sticky mess of sap and honey. He was going so fast that, suddenly, he lost his balance and tripped into darkness.
Theo awoke at night.
‘Hello?’ his words echoed through the unseeable as he stumbled through the emptiness of black. Ice prickled its way up his spine. Theo’s heart drummed a quick beat, tempo rising as his stomach thought it was a good idea to squirm around.
Slowly, up ahead, an orange light began to fill the tunnel. Theo sprang up and sprinted towards the sign of an entrance, but immediately halted and froze like a statue.
Critterdragons whizzed out of the tunnel like fighter jets zooming to war. Theo crouched behind a rock, and at the right time, sprinted out, only to find himself right in front of a…
Brown.
Furry.
Shrimp-like creature.
Like a first instinct, Theo plunged the knife into the large, muscly back of the Soul Sucker and in a cry of rage, ended its misery.
Peace.
The world was back to normal.
Theo, Grandma and Mum.
STAGE 2 FINALIST
The Holland Island Evil- By Lea Leturgie
Boom!...Hugo is having a hard time in the stormy sky. He darts down and loosely digs his talons into the cold sand.
Hugo is a baby dragon whose mum died from a stampede. The poor baby dragon suffered to stay alive. Hugo has black scales that are silky. His electric blue eyes are as handsome as any other. His horns are swirly just like his mothers.
Hugo took a deep breath and tried to relax. Crash! Thunder sounded, and a crash of beady light erupted through the hemisphere and straight into Turtle Island. Hugo had no doubt he wasn’t going to be forced to leave the island.
Hugo roared as he glided into the stormy sky. His eyes burned as they brimmed with tears. As wet as the time he found out his mother had died. As sad as the time he figured out his only friend had been slayed by those filthy, horrible humans.
Hugo watched Turtle Island burn away.
His home.
A big whip hit his wing and he doubled over. Hugo fell into the water. It felt like being plunged into a freezing ice-bath!
Hugo watched the air whip away.
Hugo knew something wasn’t right. Bump! The earth rumbled, he was as confused as a monkey! Something clicked, a tremor.
Hugo closed his eyes and thought for a moment. 1 second, 2 secon- Oof!
It’s a whirlpool!
As he expected, everything started spinning non stop. Hugo wondered if the whirlpool ever was going to stop.
Suddenly, everything went still. It was quiet... even though it was sending Hugo straight into a rock like he was a piece of trash!
He saw blood everywhere.
Everything went black.
After what felt like a century, Hugo’s electric eyes flashed open. They blurred then came into focus. Hugo beat his wings, making water splash everywhere.
Arrggghhhh! Something grabbed him. It had black eyes and a slithery tail. It was followed by something else, a ghost? He thought ghosts just wandered around not doing anything. Could the ghosts be changing?
The cold snake looking thing hissed at him. Hugo forced himself to attempt to take off to the blue skies, but the snake-like thing slammed its tail down on his chest and he landed in the water with a big splash! Hugo was hatching a plan. If he could just slip under the water, and glide away to live somewhere else. Plus, Hugo wanted to get his paws on solid ground.
Ground! 3,2,1, go! He ducked under the water, and swam like a torpedo, as fast as he could away from the terrifying snake.
Once he thought he was safe, he flew out and over the water. First, he thought of a plan, ding!
He knew what he was going to do. Tonight he was going to find the snake-like creature and destroy him........

STEM Learning in Year 6
STEM learning is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics learning. This week, Year 6 had the opportunity to experience STEM learning through activities using Edison Robots. The students learnt that the Edison robot is programmed to respond to stimuli or perform tasks according to cause-and-effect relationships. For the Edison robot, this is by using its light and sound sensors. The students explored how robots move by applying concepts of forces and motion. Please see the photos of Year 6 below enjoying their Edison robot lesson.

SFX Athletics Carnival
Last Wednesday, we held our SFX Athletics Carnival at Chickiba Oval under beautiful sunny skies. The day began in great spirit, with our House Captains leading the morning prayer and war cries, setting an energetic and enthusiastic tone for the event.
For our Kindergarten and Year 1 students, it was their very first athletics carnival, and they participated with wide smiles and great excitement. Our Year 6 students made the most of their final primary school carnival, showing excellent sportsmanship and leadership throughout the day.
There were many close results and outstanding performances across all age groups. The winning House, age champions, and our Zone Athletics Team will be officially announced at today’s assembly.
A heartfelt thank you goes to our wonderful parent helpers who could be there on the day—Mitch Niland, David Parker, Kirsty Reddan, Keira Brandscheid, Deb Bomba, Luke Briggs, and Anne Dogan—who supported the day by helping run events, setting up early in the morning, and staying back for the pack-down. Your help made the day run smoothly and efficiently.
We were also supported by five Xavier College students, who were a fantastic help throughout the carnival—thank you for your time and energy.
A massive thank you to The Allstars Athletics Club for their generous support in providing equipment.
Thank you to the Lennox Lions Club for their attendance and who made special mention of the outstanding behaviour and manners of our SFX students—a wonderful reflection of our school community.
And of course, the coffee van was a favourite addition to the day, keeping our spectators and staff refreshed!
The Richmond Zone Athletics Carnival will be held in Week 2 of Term 3, 31st July at Woodlawn. We look forward to cheering on our SFX team as they represent the school with pride.

Polding Rugby Union Trials
Last week Vinnie travelled to Forbes, as part of the Lismore Diocesan team to compete at the Polding trials for Rugby Union. By all reports Vinnie played well in extremely cold conditions. He made the possible and probables, however missed selection in the Polding side. Thank you again Vinnie for being a respectful competitor and representative of St Francis Xavier.

Girls Cricket Breakfast Blitz
Unfortunately this Term we were unable to go ahead with the Girls Cricket Blitz after school due to lack of registrations. Many girls were keen to participate however, had prior commitments after school.
Cricket NSW were hoping to combat this issue by holding a Girls only Breakfast Blast program. The program will commence in the second week of Term 3 on Wednesday 30th July starting at 8:15am on the school grounds and finishing by 9am. Breakfast will be provided free of charge. The entire program will be 4 weeks in duration and happening every Wednesday.
If the program goes ahead, in the second week (6th August) of the program, Cricket NSW will pick up Sammy-Jo Johnson (local female cricket royalty) and Jack Edwards (Sydney Sixers) from the airport and come directly to the school for a special visit between 12pm and 2pm. The cricket stars will run a session with the girls in the Breakfast Blast Program but also have a Q & A/photo opportunity session with other classes.
If you would like your child to participate in the Girls Cricket Breakfast Program, please scan the QR code on the flyer and register your child’s details.

Student Travel...

Students are supervised at school from 8:30am. If your child/ren are walking, riding or being dropped off, they are not to arrive before 8:30am. When they do arrive at school they are to sit under the Shelter Shed until instructed by the teacher on duty.
When leaving school, students depart in one of four ways:
Bus - Children are to sit in bus lines and wait for teachers’ instructions to board their bus. Bus pass forms are available online.
Bike - Students are to move quickly to their bikes or scooters and walk these to the gate at the front of the school. They must not ride these on school premises and they should take the shortest and safest route home.
Walking - These children should leave through the front school gate without delay. Any child needing to cross Swift Street should wait at the crossing and be directed by the Crossing Supervisor.
Pick up - Children being picked up should wait in the School Hall with the supervising teacher until collected and then leave with their parent or guardian. Students should be collected no later than 3:20pm.
Parents are reminded not to ask their child/ren to wait outside the school fence or in an unsupervised area. This is for the safety of the child/ren. All students MUST be collected from the School Hall or Martin Street Gate.
Road Safety Around the School
In order to keep our students safe, please adhere to the road safety rules around St Francis Xavier when dropping off or collecting your child.
All roads surrounding and adjoining our school are signed and subject to School Zone Road Restrictions from 8am to 9:30am in the morning and 2:30pm to 4pm in the afternoon on all school days. Ballina Shire Council enforces these road rules and does issue penalties, particularly for double-parking.
There are two private residences, one on the corner of Swift St and Martin St, and one on the corner of Martin St and Crane St. Please ensure you are not parking in these driveways. These driveways need to be kept clear at all times for resident access.
